Former Marysville High School Star Mike Walker Will Manage the Gold Sox in 2016
Mike, who was born in Yuba City, was a three-sport standout at Marysville High School in baseball, football, and basketball. After graduating in 2006, Walker took his baseball talents to the University of Pacific Tigers.
A four-year starter for the Tigers at third-base, Walker capped his career in 2010 with a selection to the All-Big West Second Team. As a senior, Walker put together one of the most successful seasons in Pacific program history after having led the Tigers in nearly every offensive power category. For the season, Walker paced the team with 12 home runs, 52 RBI, 123 total bases, and a .552 slugging percentage.
After his senior season, Walker was selected in the 14th round by the Milwaukee Brewers. He spent four seasons in the Brewers organization where he played for Helena, Wisconsin, Brevard County, and Huntsville. In four seasons, Walker produced a .264 batting average while hitting 47 home runs and driving in 229 RBI, including going for 12 home runs and 41 RBI while with Double-A Huntsville.
In 2013, Walker took his talents to the international stage as part of Australia’s National Team, where he competed in the World Baseball Classic. Walker holds dual citizenship, as his mother Anne was born and raised in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, where he lived between the ages of one and three. He led the team in hitting, going 5-for-11 (.455) in three games.
Walker decided to hang up his cleats in 2014 and returned to the University of Pacific to earn his degree. He is now in his third season as an assistant baseball coach and director of baseball operations for the Tigers.
Mike is no stranger to Colusa Casino Stadium or Collegiate Summer Baseball, as he served as the skipper of the Redding Colt .45s this past summer. The Colt .45s went 2-4 against the Gold Sox this year. Redding lost all four games in Marysville, but earned the sweep in Redding.
The Gold Sox management and ownership appreciate everything that former manager Jack Johnson has done for the club and the community over the last decade. Jack recommended Mike for the position and he played an integral part in bringing him on board.
